Throw Your Hat In The Ring

How often do you find yourself momentarily inspired to try something new, aiming for an achievement of some kind only to talk yourself down. Your negative mind coming up with all the reasons you can’t do it. You think things like ‘I’m too busy, I just don’t have the time, I already have so much on my plate with the kids and work, I’m getting older, I don’t have the money, I don’t have the energy, I’m not talented enough, I couldn’t ever commit to that, I’ve never done anything like it before, I wouldn’t know where to start’ etc. and a thousand other bullshit excuses we come up with. None of which are valid, but your negative mind has convinced you it is. What has really happened is that doubt has defeated you, rather than the task.

Chances are that you never took a single step at all toward achieving the goal. Most dreams never actually become a set goal, they are just a pleasant thought that someday way off in the distance would be nice if it were to come to fruition. For those who make the switch from dream to set goal, often quitting when first met with any level of resistance is also very common. It takes commitment, resilience, persistence, discipline, hard work and belief in yourself to endure the inevitable resistance you will experience when aiming up, chasing down a goal.

The bigger the task you set for yourself, the harder it will be to achieve. You will naturally experience more obstacles the higher you aim, requiring you to dig deeper into your reserves of the above-mentioned attributes to get through the challenges. These attributes of resilience, persistence, discipline etc. take work to develop, lots of hard work over an extended period of time, they don’t come free. They also require maintaining, it’s constant work to stay sharp. Like any blade will become blunt over time, these skills take work to remain sharp.

Often a lack of work to develop these attributes is the reason that doubt is able to creep in, in the first place. Just overcoming doubt, that little niggling voice at the back of our mind is a skill in itself that takes practice. Deliberate exposure to it, is necessary to learn how to effectively talk it down.

Ask yourself, what is it that you are afraid of? Failing? People laughing at you? Disappointment?

Now ask yourself ‘wouldn’t I feel like a failure and experience disappointment anyway if I never even tried to achieve the things that I want for myself’? I know for sure that the disappoint in myself I’d experience at never trying, would be so much worse than having had a go, throwing my hat in the ring and falling short.

Don’t be afraid to fall short, be afraid of never having the courage to try. Don’t be afraid to fuck things up, you’ll learn valuable lessons from those mistakes and come back more resilient and wiser the next time around. Push yourself out of your comfort zone regularly, allowing yourself to develop the skills you’ll need to enjoy success when aiming big to achieve any task you set for yourself. Fear and doubt will rob you blind, learn to rob it of any opportunity to gain a foothold in your mind.

So what if someone were to laugh at you for failing, fuck them!

Who cares if you experience some disappointment if things don’t work out at first, don’t let that disappointment defeat you, it's not an excuse to quit. Pick yourself up and go again.

Don’t shy away from discomfort, embrace it, seek it out. It’s beneficial to endure it, running away from it will only make you weaker.

Fuck things up from time to time, it’s ok not to be perfect, no one is. So long as we learn from our mistakes and make a genuine effort to be better next time there is real value in not getting things right all the time.

Over time you’ll realise no one is laughing at you. No one really cares what you do, other than those close to you, family and some true friends who want to see you to succeed. People in general are too busy with their own shit to give a fuck about what you’re doing. It’s all in your head if you think people are invested in what you’re doing. If anyone were to criticise you for having a go at something, it is because they would never throw their hat into the arena themselves. They have nothing good going on in their own sad life to focus on, instead they focus on others. Who gives a single fuck what they think, pity them rather than paying any attention to their opinion.

Whether you succeed or not in any endeavour you turn your hand to is entirely up to you. There are no legitimate excuses not to try but that negative voice inside your head will do it’s best to convince you otherwise. Failing along the way is also a choice, obstacles are just something to overcome and continue on. The only failure is quitting, everything else is just a setback. If you never quit no matter how difficult it may be to endure the setback, it is impossible not to succeed it the long run. That road may be long and arduous, with many twists and turns but you can navigate it all and reach the finish line. With the right mindset you will overcome anything in your way along that road.

Now is the best time to start, set a goal and get working on it. Don’t allow your negative mind to make excuses, overcome that shit a press on in spite of it. Believe in yourself and see it through, be willing to do the work. Throw your hat into the ring and find yourself among the elite few willing to have go, endure the setbacks, keep moving forward and succeed.
